Conservation Walks
Our
Conservation Walk is set within the walls of an ancient
monument whose true former identity has faded through the
mists of time. Archaeologists can’t decide whether it was
a fort or a hunting lodge. Or was it, as locals believe,
a cattle stockade to protect valuable stock from marauding
bears and wolves? You decide!
This
is an idyllic summer walk, set in an area of natural regeneration
within Newball Wood SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest).
This is one of the Forestry Commission’s lime woods and
is a national nature reserve.
Guided
by local experts, you will see the preferred areas of the
local flora and fauna. Wet and dry areas, bat boxes, bird
boxes and feeding stations combine to make this a magical
place to be. But the walk will do more than entrance you
with its beauty. Our aim is to show how with a little education
and thought we can all become conservationists in our own
right.
